The Small Group Metrics screen gives a visual overview of small group coverage and attendance across your congregation — how many adults are in a group versus unattached, and how total small group attendance has trended over the past year.

Go to Church Admin → Small Groups → Small group metrics.

The pie chart — group coverage

The first chart is a 3D pie chart showing the proportion of adults in the directory who are in a small group versus those who are unattached — not assigned to any group. This is one of the most useful metrics for a church’s small group strategy: a healthy church generally wants as many people as possible connected into a group rather than floating unconnected.

The chart counts adults only — people with a People Type of Adult. Children and teenagers are excluded from this view.

Filtering by member type

By default the chart includes everyone regardless of member type. Use the member type checkboxes above the chart to filter — for example tick only Members and Regular Attenders to see what proportion of your committed congregation is in a group, excluding the wider mailing list from the calculation. Tick your selections and click Update pie chart to refresh.

The attendance graph — small group attendance over time

Below the pie chart, a line graph shows total small group attendance figures over the past twelve months, drawn from the attendance records entered for groups. This gives a picture of whether your small group network is growing, stable, or declining over time.

The graph only appears if attendance has been recorded for small groups. If no graph appears, start recording group attendance at Church Admin → Attendance → Add attendance and select a small group as the meeting type. See Attendance tracking.

What to do with the data

  • Large unattached segment — use the Unattached to group list at Church Admin → Small Groups → Unattached to group list to see who is not in a group and reach out to invite them. See Unattached to group list.
  • Declining attendance trend — cross-reference with the absentee report and individual attendance history to identify groups or individuals with attendance issues that need pastoral attention. See Attendance tracking.
  • High unattached count after filtering by Member type — if many committed members are not in a small group, this may indicate a need to plant new groups or review whether existing groups are welcoming to newcomers.
