Sending a message in Ministry Chat is straightforward — open the room, type your message, and send. Here’s everything you need to know.
Before you start
To send a chat message you need:
- A WordPress account linked to your directory entry — if you can’t log in, ask your church administrator to set one up for you (see Creating user accounts)
- Access to Chat via the Our Church app, your church website, or — for admins — the WordPress dashboard
Choosing a room
When you open Chat you’ll see the rooms available to you listed down the side. Every logged-in member has access to General. If you are part of any ministry teams, those rooms will also appear — for example Worship Band or Welcome Team. You will only see rooms for ministries you belong to.
Tap or click the room you want to post in to open the conversation.
Sending a text message
- Open the room you want to post in
- Click or tap in the message box at the bottom of the screen
- Type your message
- Press Enter on a keyboard, or tap the send button in the app
Your name will appear alongside the message — but no other personal details such as your phone number or email address are visible to other members.
Attaching an image
You can attach an image to any message. Look for the attachment or image icon next to the message box, select the image from your device, and send as normal. The image will appear inline in the conversation for everyone in the room to see.
A few things to bear in mind
- Rooms are not private conversations — everything you post in a room is visible to all members of that room, and to church administrators
- There are no direct messages — Chat is room-based only, so if you need to contact someone individually use email or phone
- Messages may disappear — your administrator may have set messages to automatically delete after a certain number of days, so don’t rely on Chat as a permanent record of anything important
- Admins can delete messages — any message that is inappropriate or posted in error can be removed by a church administrator
Using Chat in the app
The Our Church app is the best way to use Ministry Chat day to day. The app can send you a push notification when a new message arrives in any of your rooms, so you don’t need to keep checking manually. See Getting started with the app for help installing it.
