The Unattached to Group List shows everyone in the directory who is not currently assigned to any small group. It’s the starting point for making sure every member of your congregation is connected into community — you can assign people to groups directly from this screen without having to open each person’s record individually.
Go to Church Admin → Small Groups → Unattached to group list.
Filtering the list
Two sets of checkboxes let you narrow down who appears:
- People types — defaults to Adults only. Tick Teenager or Child if you also want to see younger people who haven’t been assigned to a group. Note that children are typically managed through the Age Related Groups module rather than small groups.
- Member types — defaults to all member types. Tick specific types to focus the list — for example showing only Members and Regular Attenders rather than everyone on the Mailing List, which makes the list more actionable.
Click Choose to apply the filters and reload the list.
Assigning someone to a group
Each person in the list is shown with their name — which links to their full directory record — and a Choose a group dropdown listing all your active small groups. Select a group from the dropdown and the person is assigned to it immediately via AJAX — no save button, no page reload. The person’s row fades out of the list once assigned, confirming the change has been saved.
Work through the list assigning people to groups one by one. If you’re not sure which group someone should join, click their name to open their record in a new tab and review their address or other details before deciding.
If the list is empty
An empty list — after selecting your filters — means everyone matching those criteria is already in a group. This is a healthy sign. If the list seems unexpectedly empty, check whether your filter selections are too narrow — try ticking all member types to confirm.
How people end up unattached
People appear on this list in a few circumstances:
- They were newly added to the directory and haven’t been assigned to a group yet
- They were removed from a group — Church Admin automatically moves them to the unattached category rather than leaving them with no group status at all
- Their group was deleted
- The directory issues checker found them with no group and marked them as unattached. See Check for directory issues.
